ABOUT THE BOOK

The science of uṣūl al-fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence) is one of the most essential disciplines in Islamic studies, forming the theoretical foundation of Islamic law and safeguarding its methodology and definitions. Mastery of this science is crucial for understanding how legal rulings are derived, and scholars throughout history have authored works suited for beginners, intermediate students, and advanced scholars.

Among the most widely studied introductory texts in uṣūl al-fiqh is al-Waraqāt, renowned for its concise style and elegant structure. Authored by Imam Abū al-Maʿālī al-Juwaynī (Imam al-Ḥaramayn), one of the greatest scholars of Islamic legal theory, the book has long been regarded as a foundational text for students beginning their study of Islamic legal principles.

Due to its importance, al-Waraqāt has received significant scholarly attention, with numerous commentaries and marginal notes written to explain its precise and condensed language. Dr. Saʿīd Fawdah, a distinguished contemporary scholar, gave this text special attention from the earliest stages of his academic career, teaching it as a core work in uṣūl al-fiqh.

His later marginal notes were written to provide a clear and systematic methodology for beginners, offering explanations, practical examples, subtle distinctions, and clarifications of complex concepts. This work serves as an ideal introduction to Islamic legal theory, guiding students toward a strong and structured understanding of uṣūl al-fiqh while preparing them for advanced study.
