ABOUT THE BOOK

Fatawa Shaykh al-Islam Abi al-Hasan ʿAta ibn Hamzah al-Sughdi (فتاوى شيخ الإسلام أبي الحسن عطاء بن حمزة السغدي) is an important early Arabic collection of Hanafi legal rulings and Fatwas attributed to the renowned jurist Shaykh al-Islam Abu al-Hasan ʿAta ibn Hamzah al-Sughdi.

The collection was gathered and transmitted by his student, the celebrated Hanafi scholar Imam Najm al-Din Abu Hafs ʿUmar al-Nasafi (d. 537 AH). Al-Sughdi was recognised as an accomplished authority in the Hanafi school, and biographical sources record that legal questions were sent to him from different regions.

This work is particularly significant because it represents an early layer of the Hanafi Fatwa tradition. The surviving work is rare: the editor of the modern edition initially worked from the only manuscript copy he was able to locate, while references to its rulings can also be found scattered throughout later classical Hanafi literature.

The book is therefore a valuable resource for Ulama, Muftis, researchers and advanced students of Hanafi Fiqh, particularly those interested in classical Fatwa literature and the transmission and development of Hanafi jurisprudence.
