ABOUT THE BOOK

Arabic rhetoric emerged within the framework of religious thought and was shaped by two central aims: understanding the principles of Islamic law and articulating the miraculous nature of the Qur’an. From its earliest development, rhetoric functioned as a tool for interpreting revelation and expressing its unique eloquence.

Accordingly, this book examines processes of inference and reasoning without attempting to trace the historical evolution of rhetoric itself. Instead, it concentrates on the intellectual relationship between Arabic rhetoric and religious thought.

The study proceeds along two complementary lines. The first adopts a scholarly approach, exploring the sources of religious thought and their influence on the formation of Arabic rhetorical theory. The second follows a literary approach, addressing the concept of Qur’anic inimitability and the philosophical foundations of rhetorical beauty within Islamic intellectual tradition.
