ABOUT THE BOOK

The work documents the life of Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, including his education, teachers, scholarship, religious services, spiritual training, character and influence upon the Ulama of the Indian subcontinent. It also preserves accounts and recollections that provide readers with insight into his scholarly and spiritual life.

Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi was an important figure in the nineteenth-century South Asian Islamic scholarly tradition and was closely associated with institutions including Darul Uloom Deoband and Mazahir Uloom Saharanpur. The biographical record in Tazkirat al-Rashid is therefore also a valuable source for studying the history and development of Islamic scholarship in the region.

The work contains material concerning his Fiqh, Tasawwuf, teaching, religious guidance and relationships with contemporary Ulama, making it considerably more than a short biographical sketch.
