ABOUT THE BOOK

This book is an attempt to highlight the major contributions made by the Maturidi school, alongside the Ashʿarī school, to the science of theology (ʿilm al-kalām). It follows a comprehensive methodology that combines transmitted texts (naql) and rational reasoning (ʿaql).

The sixth century Hijri was chosen due to its great importance in the history of Māturīdī thought, such that it may rightly be described as one of its most significant stages. During this period, some of the most eminent Maturidi scholars emerged, who played a major role in organizing, systematizing, and refining the doctrines of the school and directing its intellectual course.

This resulted in a substantial body of theological and methodological writings that established the foundations of Maturidi theology during that era. Added to this were the many theological debates and scholarly disputations that took place between Ashʿarī and Maturidi theologians, represented, for example, in Imam al-Razi (d. 606 AH) and Nur al-Dīn al-Sabuni (d. 580 AH) toward the end of the sixth century Hijri.
